Review of “Eight Eyes”

“Eight Eyes” is a very impressive and enjoyable collection of eleven solo piano compositions that revolve mostly around Mark Vantress’ family. The title refers to the four pairs of eyes belonging to his parents, sister, and himself, and how the eyes are the window to the soul. The pieces are varied, and range from the quiet and tranquil “Regina’s Bridge” to the turbulent and upbeat “Cascades. The majority of the pieces are on the quiet, reflective side, but Vantress lets us know that he is capable of a full range of tonal colors.
My favorite track by far is “Cascades,” which starts up at the top end of the piano and “cascades” down the keyboard. Rhythmic and lively, this is a big bold piece that I can listen to over and over, wishing it were in print so I could try my hand(s) with it. “Mo’s Dance” is also lively and upbeat, and seems to spin and swirl. “Glad I Met You” is darker and melancholy - perhaps a musical goodbye to someone dear - and is very beautiful. There are a lot of rich bass notes in this piece, and the melody stays in the mid-range of the piano, enhancing the somber mood of the piece. The title track is gently reflective - perhaps inspired by looking an old family photo album or revisiting a special childhood place. I really enjoyed listening to this album.”
